Southern Macaroni and Cheese
A rich and creamy baked mac and cheese with three kinds of cheese and a golden crust.
Ingredients
- 1.00 lb elbow macaroni
- 4.00 tbsp butter
- 0.25 cup all-purpose flour
- 3.00 cup whole milk
- 1.00 cup heavy cream
- 3.00 cup sharp cheddar cheese
- 1.00 cup gruyere or colby cheese
- 1.00 tsp dry mustard
- 0.50 tsp garlic powder
- salt and pepper
- 0.50 cup breadcrumbs mixed with 2 tbsp butter
Instructions

Cook macaroni according to package directions until just al dente, drain and set aside.

Preheat oven to 375ยฐF and grease a 9x13 baking dish.

Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat.

Whisk in flour and cook 1-2 minutes.

Slowly add milk and cream, whisking constantly until smooth.

Cook until thickened, about 5 minutes.

Remove from heat and stir in 2 1/2 cups cheddar, all the Gruyere, dry mustard, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

Fold in macaroni.

Pour into prepared dish.

Top with remaining cheddar and buttered breadcrumbs.

Bake 25-30 minutes until golden and bubbly.

Rest 5 minutes before serving.
